Cannon Mountain To Open Mittersill Double Chair on Jan 1
Bountiful Snowfall Allows Lift to Open On Schedule

FRANCONIA NOTCH, N.H. - Cannon Mountain announces the official rebirth of the Mittersill Ski Area with the opening of the new Mittersill Double Chair, scheduled to carry skiers and riders for the first time beginning at 8:30am on January 1. The last time there was an operating lift at Mittersill was in 1984 when the ski area officially closed. An official Grand Opening Celebration will be hosted by Governor John Lynch at later date to be determined. Cannon Mountain has received nearly 4 feet of natural snow since December 22, which was enough to officially open access to Mittersill. The snowfall was also ideal timing for the completion and certification of the lift which took place on December 30.

Cannon Mountain took complete ownership of Mittersill in March, 2009, when a land swap was complete with the US Forest Service, and operated Mittersill as large "backcountry" area with all-natural terrain (no snowmaking or grooming) and shuttle service back to the base of Cannon during 2009 and 2010. Access was gained by hiking over an access trail from the summit of Cannon Mountain.

Mittersill Terrain Area is now considered part of Cannon Mountain and will remain "all natural" with no snowmaking or grooming and an "Extra-Hazardous" terrain designation for the near future. Only expert-level skiers and riders should attempt this difficult terrain. The Mittersill Double Chair will operate daily from 8:30am – 3pm on weekend days when Mittersill Terrain Area is considered open and 9am - 3pm on midweek days. Guests wishing to access Mittersill or ride the new double chair are required to purchase a lift ticket or season pass from the Notchview Welcome Center in the Peabody Base Area at Exit 34C from I-93. Lift ticket sales will not be available directly at Mittersill. Details on conditions and operating schedules can be found on the ski area's website: www.cannonmt.com.

CANNON MOUNTAIN is located off I-93 in Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire. The Cannon Mountain Tramway (for advanced skiers/snowboarders) and New England Ski Museum are located at Exit 34B, while the Peabody Base Lodge and Tuckerbrook Family Area are located at Exit 34C.
