Cannon Mountain Press Release: Aerial Tramway Evacuation - February 14, 2016

Cannon Mountain area lift mechanics and ski patrol were alerted to an unplanned stop on Cannon’s Aerial Tramway today @ 1:50 pm. In a tramway system, there are 2 cars that move at the same time. One leaves the bottom terminal and one leaves the top terminal. They had come to a stop roughly 50-75 feet from the top and bottom terminals. It was determined that a mechanical issue had caused the braking system to become engaged and stuck on.

There were 41 people on the car at the bottom going up and 7 people in the top car coming down. Just after 3pm, blankets were sent up to the top car to help guests stay warm. A call was made to begin evacuating people from the cars, beginning with the top car at 3:20pm. Evacuation of the top car was complete at 3:45, and guests were escorted into the top terminal restaurant and were offered hot food and drinks. They were brought down the mountain by snowcats to the base at 4:30pm.

Evacuation of the bottom car began at 3:45pm and was complete by 4:45pm. Guests were brought into the bottom terminal and offered hot food and drinks. All guests were also offered vouchers to come back another day.

Emergency personnel were on hand at the base and summit and no injuries were reported.

Lift mechanics were still working on correcting the issue with the Tramway and the mountain expects to re-open the tram as soon as possible.
