The Old Man of The Mountain

The Old Man of the Mountain Profile Plaza

The Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund, with the support of hundreds of people, has created the Profile Plaza in Franconia Notch as a lasting monument to honor the Old Man. The Legacy Fund completed the Plaza and turned it over to the State of New Hampshire in 2015. Walk the short, paved path to Profile Lake to enjoy the monument that mimics the Old Man's profile.

After your visit to the Profile Plaza, stop in at the Aerial Tramway Base Station to view The Old Man of the Mountain Museum. There you will find photos, stories, relics and artwork all telling the history of New Hampshire's State Symbol!

What We Do

The Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund is a private, non-profit organization that grew out of the task force appointed by Governor Craig Benson after the collapse of the Old Man of the Mountain on May 3, 2003. The Legacy Fund works in partnership with the NH Division of Parks & Recreation to provide a “lasting legacy of remembrance” for the Old Man of the Mountain.

The Fund’s primary focus is the construction of a monument, designed by Ron Magers and Shelly Bradbury, which provides an exciting new visitor attraction and honors the state’s much-loved emblem. The Old Man of the Mountain Profile Plaza was dedicated in June 2011 and includes seven steel "profilers" that recreate the visage of the Old Man looking over Franconia Notch. The Plaza also includes hundreds of paver stones purchased by friends of the Old Man from throughout the Granite State and far beyond. Each of these paver stones are engraved with personal messages.

The Legacy Fund also maintains an exhibit at Cannon Mountain’s Tramway building and provides traveling displays and lectures for classrooms and group events across the state.

How to Get There

The Old Man of the Mountain Profile Plaza & Historic Site is located at Exit 34B from I-93 (Aerial Tramway Exit). Turn towards the Aerial Tramway and take the first left at the large wooden sign for Old Man of the Mountain. Follow that road to the parking lot. Walk around the Profile building (with seasonal restroom facilities) to the right and follow the path down to Profile Lake. There you will find the Profile Plaza.
