After 45 years of legendary service, Cannon Mountain is preparing to retire its iconic second-generation, 80-passenger aerial tramway, paving the way for a third-generation tram system to be designed and built in the coming years.

Cannon—home to the nation’s first aerial tramway, launched in 1938—is the only mountain in North America to reach a third-generation tram. Since 1980, the current tram has carried more than nine million passengers to the 4,080-foot summit, covering a one-mile span in under seven minutes, making it one of the most iconic lifts in the East.

Cannon Mountain Announces Timeline and Other Details for Retirement of Iconic Aerial Tramway

Franconia, NH – September 4, 2025— Following the July announcement of Cannon Mountain’s plan to retire its second-generation aerial tramway, Cannon officials have released additional details about its send-off. The final date of Aerial Tramway operations will be Sunday, October 26. 

With leaves already beginning to show color in Franconia Notch, visitors are reminded to book their tram tickets online in advance to guarantee their spot on Tram II during its final foliage season.

Structural Analysis Begins on Cannon Aerial Tramway

Franconia, N.H. - September 24, 2025 — Cannon Mountain, home to North America’s first aerial tramway, has begun structural analysis as part of its plan to build a third-generation tram system. Partnering with SCJ Alliance, a nationally recognized engineering firm specializing in aerial lifts, this milestone marks the start of detailed evaluation and design work.

SCJ Alliance has led major ropeway projects across the U.S. and abroad, bringing expertise in feasibility, design, and engineering for complex mountain transportation systems. The firm’s portfolio includes the modernization of the Roosevelt Island Tramway in Manhattan, Jackson Hole’s iconic tramway in Wyoming, and current tramway evaluations in the Rocky Mountains.
